Asia's oldest engineering college opened at Roorkee in 1847 and is today IIT Roorkee; the head works of the Upper Ganga Canal are here.
Roorkee is a development block of Haridwar district, in the Garhwal division. Haridwar is where the Ganga leaves the hills for the plains, and the Kumbh Mela is held here every twelve years. Roorkee, in the same district, is where Asia's oldest engineering college (now IIT Roorkee) opened in 1847.
